Residential Pool Care vs Commercial Pool Care, Which is Better
Description
Residential pool service and commercial pool service are two different types of pool services, with their own unique set of characteristics and requirements. Some pool pros prefer to just focus on residential pool care while others like to do both or just focus on commercial pools.
Residential pool service typically involves the maintenance and cleaning of pools in private homes. This service is focused on keeping the pool clean and functional, and typically includes tasks such as pool cleaning, chemical balancing, equipment maintenance, and repairs. Residential pool service does not require CPO Certification and in most cases, all you need is a business license.
Commercial pool service, on the other hand, involves the maintenance and cleaning of larger pools in public places, such as hotels, resorts, and community centers. You will need CPO Certification or be certified by your local health department. You are also required to keep chemistry logs and other forms and you will need the maximum general liability insurance policy.
This service requires a higher level of expertise and specialization, as these pools often have more complex systems and require more frequent maintenance. Commercial pool service may include tasks such as water testing and treatment, equipment repair and replacement, and compliance with local health and safety regulations. There is also a big headache factor with commercial pools as you will run into all kinds of strange issues including floating dirty diapers, a crazed health department inspector, and hard-to-deal-with management companies.
Another key difference between residential and commercial pool services is the frequency of service. Residential pool service is typically performed on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, while commercial pool service may require daily or multiple times per week service, depending on the usage of the pool. So you have to be committed to doing commercial pool service.
Overall, while there may be some overlap in the services provided, residential pool service and commercial pool service require different skill sets, equipment, and levels of expertise, and should be approached as distinct services. Mixing them on your service route leads to complications since commercial pool service is more time-consuming and demanding.
Pros of taking on commercial pools:
Steady income: Commercial pool service can provide a steady stream of income, as these clients often require regular and ongoing maintenance.
Larger revenue potential: Commercial pools are often larger and require more extensive maintenance and repairs, which can lead to higher revenue potential for pool service providers.
Cons of taking on commercial pools:
Increased liability: Commercial pools are subject to a higher level of regulation and oversight, and pool service providers may be held liable for accidents or injuries that occur on the property.
Higher costs: Commercial pool service requires specialized equipment and supplies, which can be more expensive than those used for residential pools.
Longer service hours: Commercial pools often require service outside of regular business hours, which can be more demanding and require a greater time commitment from pool service providers.
