Description

Besides making pool care videos each week I also film recitals for my son’s music school and orchestra and taking photos is also a family hobby. When it comes to 4K video quality I am a bit of a Canon snob. I think Canon has the truest and best color 4K for the consumer and “prosumer” category (almost professional-quality video). I put two of my 4K cameras to the test side by side, the Canon 90D, and the Canon Vixia G50.

Note that Canon has many models of their consumer/pro-level camcorders and besides the G50 there is a G60 with a 1” sensor and the XA40. I picked up the G50 because it was under $1,000 and the 4K had very good reviews. The 90D is a DSLR camera -simply put it is a camera with interchangeable lenses. It is Canon's first consumer DSLR that features 4K quality that matches a pro-type DSLR quality. You can purchase a 90D body only without lenses for about $1,100.

I own a slew of cameras including a Canon T2, Canon T5i, Canon 80D, the 90D, and now the Vixia G50. Plus a handful of underwater cameras and 4K sports cameras. So I am very familiar with 4K quality but could not find a video that compares the 4K from a DSLR camera to the 4K of a camcorder. And from the video, you will see that there is a marked difference in how the 4K is rendered from each of these two cameras.

I think by the nature of a camcorder the Vixia G50 4K is very sharp and in focus, in fact, everything in the frame is in focus without a lot of depth to the shot. This is just how a camcorder records footage so either you will like it or not. The DSLR lens will shoot the 4K a little different, with the main subject in focus and the background in less focus. So the DSLR 4K looks a little softer and more real whereas the camcorder 4K looks clear, sharp, and in focus.

Canon Vixia G50 4K Specs:

Record high-resolution 4K video with the compact, black Canon Vixia HF G50 4K Camcorder. The G50 features a 1/2.3" UHD 4K CMOS sensor, a DIGIC DV 6 image processor, an 8-blade circular aperture, 5-axis image stabilization, a 20x optical zoom in 4K, and up to UHD 4K30 resolution.

Canon 90D 4K Specs:
Canon EOS 90D: key specs
Sensor: 32.5MP APS-C CMOS sensor.
Image processor: Digic 8.
AF points: 45 cross-type points.
ISO range: 100 to 25,600 (expandable to 51,200)

In case you're wondering my son plays the Pino, Cello, Viola, and takes voice lessons. He is quite musical and has a good ear for it.
